Son Goku (孫 悟空, Son Gokū), born Kakarot (カカロット, Kakarotto), is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball metaseries created by Akira Toriyama, and the main protagonist of the online doujin Dragon Ball New Age. He is the adoptive grandson of Grandpa Gohan, the husband of Chi-Chi, the father of Gohan and Goten, and the grandfather of Pan.
Cheerful, courageous and also quite naive, Goku is a Saiyan originally sent to Earth as an infant with the mission to destroy it. However, an accident alters this, causing him to later become Earth's greatest defender and the informal leader of Earth's Super Warriors. Throughout his life, he trains hard and strives to be the greatest warrior possible, while at the same time using his amazing strength and skills to uphold peace
Despite taking place in an alternate timeline, the history of DBNA's Goku differs very little to the mainstream timeline's Goku, until the alterations of the DBNA Universe's Dragon Ball GT.
Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and the end of the Baby SagaEdit
Due to the fracture in time during the Baby Saga of Dragon Ball GT, Son Goku's history up until that point had changed very little (save for Anime-Only events, Movies, and Filler, all of which did not exist or happen until this point).
Dragon Ball GT (Altered Timeline)Edit
Following the defeat of Baby and Son Goku's ascension to Super Saiyan 4, the timeline split into two directions. One direction was the Dragon Ball GT known by all, while the other was a direction that followed Manga Canon (The DBNA Universe).
Goku is still a kid and fights in the 31st World Martial Arts Tournament, having to fight in the Junior Division with Mr. Satan saying there is a height requirement. In the finals, his opponent wins by tickling Goku while he is talking to Vegeta, resulting in Goku falling out of the ring.
Some time afterwards, Goku and his family and friends are at home eating, until a badly beaten up Trunks arrives, saying he encountered No. 17, who told him to tell Goku to meet him in the mountain outskirts of South City. Goku leaves to face No. 17, where he meets and is immediately attacked by him. Goku manages to hold him off while in his normal state, but No. 17 is noticably more powerful than before. Soon, much to Son Goku's surprise, a second Android 17 appears, and begins to attack him as well. Caught off guard, Goku is defeated soundly by the two 17's, who leave him buried underneath a mountain.
Awakening some time later, Goku fights the newly developed Super 17 after reaching the battlefield. With the help of No. 18, vengeful towards No. 17 for Kuririn's death, Goku is able to defeat Super 17 with the use of the Super Dragon Fist through the android's stomach and chest. Goku then finishes off the android with a Kamehameha through the wounded Super 17's stomach, causing him to explode.
When the dragon, Shenron, is summoned to revive those killed by Super 17, the Dragon Balls crack, and a different, cigar-smoking dragon appears in his place. Black Smoke Shenron promptly splits into seven Shadow Dragons, each with a cracked Dragon Ball in its body. Goku and his companions fight valiantly to defeat these new dragons. However, after six of the seven are defeated (Naturon, Rage, Haze, Oceanus, Eis, and Nova) in a series of many struggles, the One-Star Dragon, Syn Shenron absorbs the other Dragon Balls into himself, forming Omega Shenron. After Goku and Vegeta (now a Super Saiyan 4) fail to defeat him, they fuse, creating Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. However, the fused warrior does not finish off the evil Shadow Dragon before the fusion wears off. After being mortally wounded (in the original DBGT Timeline, Goku was presumably killed) by Omega's Negative Karma Ball, Goku asks the people of the planet Earth to send him their energy. The collected energy is not enough to defeat Omega Shenron, so Goku asks King Kai to help him. Energy from all over the galaxy is collected, creating an enormous Spirit Bomb. The Spirit Bomb is successful in destroying Omega Shenron.
The people of Earth witness this and finally realize Son Goku is a hero. Afterwards, the real Shenron appears once again, saying that no more wishes will be granted for a long time. After convincing Shenron to grant one last wish and asking that all the people who were killed by Super 17 and the Shadow Dragons be revived, the Dragon Balls disappear from the world forever (Son Goku does not leave with Shenron at this point). As he lay dying, Goku tells Vegeta that the lives of everyone are now in his hands, passing the role of protector of the Earth and anyone in need of help, to Vegeta. After a heartfelt good-bye, Son Goku succumbs to his injuries and peacefully passes on to the Afterlife.
Dragon Ball New AgeEdit
main article: Chapter ZERO
In the two years after his death at the hands of Omega Shenron, Son Goku's body was returned to normal in the afterlife. Unbeknownst to him, however, Pan and Trunks have discovered the Black Dragon Balls, a set of Dragon Balls created by Demon King Piccolo, that had only just become active. Hēi Shenron, the dragon residing within them, is wished by Pan to restore Goku to life, which the Dragon easily grants. After Pan explains how they had come to that point, Hēi Shenron demands to know the next wish. Son Goku uses the second wish to restore Piccolo's life, he then uses his third wish to make the Black Dragon Balls unable to be used again. After Hēi Shenron departs, Son Goku teleports himself, Pan, Trunks, and Piccolo to No.18's Inauguration Party, where they celebrate with their loved ones
Rigor, Vegeta's BrotherEdit
main article: Rigor Saga
A year after being revived by Hēi Shenron, Vegeta's long lost half-brother Rigor arrives on Earth. Given his weakened condition following his intense training with Gohan and Uub, Goku is initially unable to join the fight against Rigor. But thanks to Korin, and a few Senzu beans, Goku recuperates and teleports to the battlefield to fight alongside Vegeta.
The two Saiyan warriors fight tenaciously, but even together they are clearly outmatched. As the battle escalates, Rigor transforms into a Super Saiyan 5, leaving Goku and Vegeta no other options but to fuse into Gogeta! But even as Gogeta, the power of Super Saiyan 5 Rigor nearly overwhelms our heroes. But after their titanic clash, Rigor is defeated, though narrowly.
Rigor leaves our heroes with words of having "ascended Super Saiyan 4". Motivated by this clue, Goku and Vegeta embark on special training.
Aladjinn, The Great Eternal EvilEdit
main article: Aladjinn Saga
While training, Goku senses various disturbances in chi. He eventually finds all the inhabitants of East City dead, and that Vegeta has somehow gone missing. After donning a new gi, Goku teleports to another disturbance, only to find Vegeta there. Vegeta, having become possessed by the demon Aladjinn, becomes an Ascended Super Saiyan 4 and attacks Son Goku. Goku, however reveals that he too has achieved this form, and battles his possessed friend. After an earth-shaking battle, Goku is eventually defeated when Aladjinn utilizes his Demon Magic to paralyze Goku's arm and chi. Goku is eventually defeated by Aladjinn, who steals a great portion of Goku's Reiki (an energy source found in all things), depriving Goku of his strength and the ability to fight.
The story after this point has not been drawn.
Because Son Goku's library of attacks are so vast, this section will only focus on the abilities he has displayed in Dragon Ball New Age.
- Chi Blast - The most basic form of energy wave.
- Flight - The user uses their chi to give them the ability to levitate.
- Kamehameha - Goku's signature move throughout the series. Goku first learns the move after witnessing Master Roshi use it to save the Ox-King and Chi-Chi's castle from an inferno (but only ends up destroying it, along with a nearby mountain). Throughout the remainder of Dragon Ball, Goku continues to master the Kamehameha and uses it in nearly every battle during Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, and into Dragon Ball New Age.
- Teleportation - Called "Instant Transmission" in the anime, Goku learns this technique on the Planet Yardrat after his battle with Freeza. This technique allows him to teleport to any location so long as he can find an energy source to home onto. He uses this technique frequently throughout the series, and is one of his most valuable abilities. During the month long time gap between Rigor's departure and the arrival of Aladjinn, Goku teaches the technique to Son Gohan.
- Fusion - The two users, when sharing the same power level, perform a simultaneous and parallel dance, ending with the contact of the users' index fingers, fusing them for half an hour (Only 10 minutes when using Super Saiyan 4). Should the dance fail, the users take on a disfigured form with low physical and chi abilities. Goku performs this technique with Vegeta during the battle against Rigor.
- Chi Sense - The ablity to sense chi energy.
It is widely known that Goku has achieved all the previous Super Saiyan forms. This section will only cover the transformations Goku has used in Dragon Ball New Age.
Super Saiyan 4Edit
main article: Super Saiyan 4
This form was achieved by Goku after regaining his conscious in the Golden Great Ape state, with help from Pan. In Dragon Ball New Age, Goku first uses this form while fighting alongside Vegeta against Rigor. Physical characteristics of this transformation include increased muscle mass; the growth of a prehensile tail; increased hair growth; dark pigmentation around the eyes and golden-yellow irides; and a full-body coat of red fur. Besides his fusion as Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, this was Goku's most powerful transformation during the Rigor Saga.
This iteration, unlike the transformations in GT, does not magically change the user's attire; though their upper-body clothing may be obliterated by the energy of the transformation. Another marked difference is that the user's tail is only visible when they are transformed.
Ascended Super Saiyan 4Edit
main article: Ascended Super Saiyan 4
Although it is unknown when exactly Goku achieved this state of Super Saiyan 4, it is assumed that he achieved this transformation in his month long training gap between the Rigor Saga and Aladjinn Saga.
When Goku transforms into an Ascended Super Saiyan 4 he has some noticeable changes, such as his hair growing and becoming even more spikier and standing more upright (similar to a cross between his normal and super saiyan hairstyles). The bio-electricity in his aura surrounding his body turns from light blue to a more yellow/ golden color, and his aura grows markedly larger and more vibrant, in addition to a slight red hue within the aura itself. His muscle mass also increases noticeably, though not enough to slow him down. It is unknown at this time whether or not these changes to his form are permanent, or if he can still utilize his normal Super Saiyan 4 form.
Gogeta is one of the most powerful characters introduced in the series. He derives his strategic battle tactics and skill from Vegeta, and his massive power and energy potential from Goku. However, due to his extraordinary power, the fusion will only last for 10 minutes (so far only confirmed for his Super Saiyan 4 form), as opposed to the usual 30 minutes, though this has been proven ample time to defeat almost any foe many times over. During the Rigor Saga, Gogeta easily dominated Rigor in the opening moments of their fight, but was nearly overwhelmed by the Saiyan only a few minutes later.
Gogeta's personality in DBNA more closely resembles his "Fusion Reborn" version than his DBGT version. He is far more serious, attempting to win the battle quickly rather than joke around and act cocky.
In the DBNA Minisode Series, Son Goku is voiced by Lawrence Simpson, better known as MasakoX of Team Four Star fame.
