Saiyans (サイヤ人, Saiya-jin) are a naturally aggressive warrior race who were nearly all obliterated by Frieza before the start of the Dragon Ball Series. They play a central role in Dragon Ball Z (manga and anime), Dragon Ball Super (Manga and anime), Dragon Ball GT (Anime) and Dragon Ball SF (fan-manga) once it is revealed that the protagonist Son Goku is actually a Saiyan who was sent to destroy the Earth.

Biography

Early Life

The Saiyans are a fighting race who, since anicent times, haved lived a violent inhumane lifestyle, where they attacked numerous planets to build up wealth and goods.Pumpin, the Original Super Saiyan appeared approximately 1,000 years (3,000 years in the Funimation Dub) prior to the Namek Saga on the planet Saiya, and is described by Vegeta as a Legendary Super Saiyan who could only retain his status in the Golden Great Ape Transformation. He appears to have lost control and gave in to his destructive power desires and destroyed himself with his own power.

A small group of Saiyans eventually found their way to Planet Tuffle and the history of the Saiyans predating their conflict with the Tuffles was revealed in the anime, where it is discussed heavily during the Vegeta Saga. it is also the central theme in the Baby Saga of Dragon Ball GT.

During the Vegeta Saga of Dragon Ball Z, King Kai describes the Saiyans as a group of barbaric aliens who shared a planet with the race known as the Tuffles. The Saiyans lived in the arid wastelands, while the Tuffles lived ni great cities, employing advanced technology. One day however, the Saiyans attacked, vowing to conquer the Tuffles' great cities, and to exstinquish the race. This sparked a ten year long war (as described in greater detail below).

In Pre- Dragon Ball, the various histories of the Saiyans are bridged together using the key elements from all the stories into one. The combined version describes the Saiyans in need of a new home planet, they invaded Planet Tuffle and are welcomed by the Tuffles. However Vegeta's father vows to take over the planet and a ten year war is soon followed. Many Tuffles and Saiyans are killed within the war, upon the rising of a full moon, the Saiyans led by King Vegeta assume their Great Ape transformations and completely wipe out the Tuffles.

Before his death, Dr. Raichi combined the Tuffle King's DNA with the parasite, Baby and sends it off into space in hopes of one day having their revenge against the SaiyansSaiyans that when the Saiyans arrive on Planet Tuffle, they are welcomed on by the Tuffles. The Tuffle survivor, Dr. Raichi, then describes the horror of the war in a similar fashion to the one King Kai tells. However whilst explaining, Vegeta states the Tuffles used the Saiyan Race as slaves.

During the Baby Saga of Dragon Ball GT, Baby described the history of the Saiyans in a different manner. He states that the Saiyans first arrived in mysterious spacepods, and attacked the Tuffles in cold blood. He states that they were led by Vegeta's father, and upon the rising of a full moon, the Saiyans assumed their Great Ape Transformations, and completely wiped out the Tuffle Race in a single night.

War on Planet Tuffle

As mentioned aboved, King Kai explained the story of the Saiyan race to Goku during the Vegeta Saga. He explained that around 720 Age a civil war broke out. The Saiyan Army tried many times to overthrow the Tuffles but were unsuccessful, sparking a ten year long conflicit on the planet. Although the Saiyans were bigger in size and physically far superior, they were few in numbers compared to the Tuffles. The Tuffles had a trump card in the form of their advanced technology to read power levels of the Saiyans and advanced weaponry such as blasters to hold them off. Then, around 730 Age, the Saiyans were able to transform into Great Apes thanks to the Full Moon that only appeared every 8 years on the planet. With this they finally annihilated the Tuffles and had the planet renamed Planet Vegeta after their commandeering hero, Vegeta's father.

At one point, a Super Saiyan God appeared on Planet Vegeta to stop the bad Saiyans, but failed because of the form's time limit and lost to King Vegeta.

Annexation of the Arcosians

King Kai goes on to explain that after their win over the Tuffles, the Saiyans were approached by the Arcosians. These aliens had money and technology, but their planet was unsuitable, so they hired a group of Saiyans to take over a planet for them and in return, they would share their technology with them. Over the years, the Saiyans also learned how to use the Tuffles' advanced equipment and became smarter and less barbaric, although they still lusted for fighting and destruction.

Around the 731 Age, the Saiyan homeworld is annexed by the Arcosian, Frieza. the Saiyans were drafted to serve as soilders in Frieza'a military under the Planet Trade Organization. Due to the Saiyans's innate strength and penchant for violence, they were considered to be useful mercenaries and assisted in the conquering of many planets, or if the assignment called for, eradication of the planet's population. Even Saiyan children were considered powerful enough to conquer some of the weaker planets. In 737 Age, a Saiyan Scientist developed the Saibamaen using biotechnology and those creatures made their way into Frieza's Planet Trade Organization through the Saiyans.

At one point, the God of Destruction, Bills appears on the Planet Vegeta and uses King Vegeta as a stepping stone as he feasted on various foods in the Kingdom.

Eventually seeing how quickly some of the more gifted Saiyan warriors were gaining power through battle, Frieza grew concerned with the potential of the Saiyan Race and thought that they would grow strong enough to face him or even become the fable Super Saiyan, able to defeat him in battle. Thus the maniacal warlord destroyed Planet Vegeta in 737 Age, nearly eradicating the Saiyan Race. Only four pure blooded Saiyans survived the destruction: Nappa, Vegeta, Raditz, and Kakarot (Goku) as they were not on the planet at the time. Once the latter three discovered that their planet were destroyed, Frieza lied to them that an asteroid had hit the world, and offered them continued employment in return for eventual wealth.

Over two decades later, the Saiyans were finally avenged when Goku defeated Frieza on Planet Namek. Frieza later met his end on Earth a year later, when Future Trunks killed him. In the anime movies only four more Saiyans survived the catastrophe: Turles (first in his non canon appearance in Dragon Ball Z" Tree of Might" and later in his canon appearance in the Nikon Saga in Dragon Ball SF), Paragus, Broly and Tarble. In Dragon Ball SF, two more Saiyans survived the castatrophe: Nikon and Mass.

Saiyan Hybrids

Through Goku and Chichi getting married, the Saiyan Hybirds are born resulting in their children, Gohan, Goten and Gochan. Vegeta eventually marries Bulma and together their children become Saiyan Hybrids as well, Trunks, Bulla, and Buma.

The first generation of Saiyan Hybrids much later eventually get married resulting in even more Saiyan Hybrids, with the first of the next generation resulting in Pan making her and many other a 1/4 Saiyan.

Much later more generations of Saiyan Hybrids are further born resulting in 1/8 Saiyans and 1/16 Saiyans.

Transformations

Great Ape

Their tail also grants a Saiyan special transformation. Though a painful weak spot for lower class Saiyans (most upper class Saiyans appear to have trained to enliminate the weakness), the tail allows a Saiyan to transform into a Great Ape with tremendous power when looking at a Full Moon. The Saiyans have limited control, but their aggressiveness is at its peak and they often become mindless animals fueled by destructive rage. The only ones capable of control while in this form are, King Vegeta, Vegeta, Nappa, and Nikon. Goku much later gains control over the much stronger Golden Great Ape transformations in order to ascend into a Super Saiyan 4 and Super Saiyan 5. Saiyan Hybrids are also able transform into Great Apes & Golden Great Apes, provided that they have tails.

Golden Great Ape

The stronger form of a Great Ape known as a Golden Great Ape first appears in Dragon Ball GT. Their offensive capacitities have become much greater, and their rage is even more intense than the Great Ape's. While in the Golden Great Ape State, the power and strength of a Saiyan increases extraodinarily. Only a few Saiyans achieved this transformation: Oni, Goku, Baby Vegeta and Vegeta. Most Saiyan hybrids such as Gohan, Trunks and Goten are also later able to transform into Golden Great Ape in Dragon Ball SF.

Puesdo Super Saiyan

The most powerful ability of a Saiyan, is the ability to drastically augment their speed and power by transforming into a Super Saiyan. A transformation of a not fully developed Super Saiyan. Goku first used this transformation in Dragon Ball Z "Lord Slug against the the evil Namekian, Lord Slug. It is similar to Super Saiyan God due to it's time limit to remain in this form. However in appearance, the irises and pupils are no longer visible, mostly in turn of power or blink rage. The skin color also appears to gain a yellow hue to it. The hair stands up on ends and gains a red tint mixed with a golden like color. In truth the form somewhat glorified King Kai's Kaio Ken Technique and makes it even sound like it. However there are notable differences. A golden aura is also emitted from the entire body similar to a Super Saiyan.

Super Saiyan

The ability is rare and difficult to achieve normally, but gives the Saiyan unbelievable enhancements to their normal abilities. While as a Super Saiyan, the hair becomes Golden Yellow, and the irises turn bluish green and a golden aura is emitted from the entire body. The Saiyan's muscle mass increases slightly along with speed and power. The only pure blooded Saiyans to ever achieve this transformation are Oni, Bardock, Broly, Goku, Vegeta, Nikon, Turles, Mass and Tarble. Most Saiyan Hybrids are also able to transform into a Super Saiyan as well.

2nd Grade Super Saiyan

The first branch of the advanced Super Saiyan transformation. It is achieved through intense training in the Super Saiyan form. It is a forced increase in the power output of the initial transformation, and is thus not a actual transformation. The only pure blooded Saiyans to achieved this advanced Super Saiyan transformation are Goku and Vegeta. Most Saiyan Hybrids such as Future Trunks can transform into a Ascended Super Saiyan.

3rd Grade Super Saiyan

the second branch of the advanced Super Saiyan Transformation. it is a greater power far beyond a Ascended Super Saiyan which is also a forced transformation. the only pure blooded Saiyan to reach this form of a Super Saiyan is Goku. the only Saiyan Hybirds that are able to reach this form of a Super Saiyan is Future Trunks. 

Super Saiyan - Full Power

The masterey of the Super Saiyan Transformation. it is a state of the mental and physical perfection of the core of the Super Saiyan transformation. Goku and Gohan are the first Super Saiyans to ever reach this state of power. most users of the Super Saiyan Transformation are eventually able to attain this form of a Super Saiyan.

Legendary Super Saiyan

Broly's exclusive Super Saiyan transformation. It is similar to a Super Saiyan and a Ultra Super Super Saiyan. However it is not a forced transformation. One thing that separates this form from all others, is that when the user remains in the form, their power actually increases constantly, which also includes their speed and strength.

Super Saiyan 2

The second stage of a Super Saiyan. the characteristics of a Super Saiyan 2 results in the golden hair become more spiky and sharper. The golden aura increases along with bio-electricity surrounding the entire body. The power and speed greatly increases beyond even a Super Saiyan. Gohan was the first to achieve the Super Saiyan 2 transformation, followed by Goku and Vegeta. Much later in Dragon Ball SF, Trunks and Goten and much later other Saiyan Hybrids obtain this form of Super Saiyan

Super Saiyan 3

The third level of the Super Saiyan transformation. in this form of a Super Saiyan, the irises remain bluish green and the pupil gains a black dot. The eyebrows vanish, and the golden hair grows to extreme lengths. The golden aura and bio electricity increases in intensity, giving off a high pitched sound. The first to obtain this form of Super Saiyan is Goku, and much later, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Goten, and Pan all achieve it in Dragon Ball SF and Dragon Ball GF.

Legendary Super Saiyan 3

another form of a Super Saiyan 3. It is similar to a Super Saiyan 3 transformation and a Legendary Super Saiyan transformation. It is assumed that staying in this form gives Broly a constant increase in speed, strength, and power. in Dragon Ball SF, Nikon (Broly's older brother) can also transform into a Legendary Super Saiyan

Super Saiyan God

A transformation beyond even Super Saiyan 3. In order to gain this form of a Super Saiyan it requires six pure Saiyans' energy to be absorbed into the user's body to awaken the transformation. However, there is a time limit while in the state similar to a False Super Saiyan. As a Super Saiyan God, the characteristics drastically changes resulting in the hair turn red and the skin gaining a tan, and the eyes turn red and the irises turning black. A flame like aura is emitted from the entire body and the user's possess god-like powers such as absorbing Ki.

Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Super Saiyan Blue)

a advance version of a Super Saiyan God introduced in Resurrection "F" and the Resurrection "F" Saga of Dragon Ball Super. afte rundeoing more training, the ability to use this form of a super saiyan God becoems availalbe and si stronger than a Super Saiyan God. also known as Super Saiyan Blue.

Super Saiyan 4

A level further beyond a Super Saiyan 3. The only way a Saiyan can attain this form is to having full control over the Super Saiyan transformation and transform into a Golden Great Ape and maintain their rationality. After doing so, the user then transform sinto a Super Saiyan 4. After the first transformation, the Saiyan can access the form from any point afterward. The transformation results in various changes depending on the Saiyan. What is common is that the hair becomes slightly long  but not as long as a Super Saiyan 3. The eye color also changes depending on the Saiyan, red fur covers the upper half of the body and the tail becomes fully visible. A flame-like golden aura is emitted from the entire body.

Divine Dragon Mode:

A unique Divine transformation inheirted from Shenron and the Dragon Balls, seen in Dragon Ball SF. while in this form, the use can grant or make wishes.

Great Ape Blue:

Another advanced form of a Great Ape introduced in Dragon Ball SF (fan-manga). in order to achieve Super Saiyan 5, you must first gain control control over this form first in order to ascend to the ultimate power of Saiyan heritage.

Super Saiyan 5 (Ultimate Saiyan God)

A unique Saiyan transformation of Super Saiyan Blue and Super Saiyan 4 introduced in Dragon Ball SF (fan-manga). After gaining control over the Great Ape Blue form, it becomes possible to transform into a Super Saiyan 5. The characteristics drastically changes resulting in the hair growing very long and wild with fur covers the upper half of the body similar t o a Super Saiyan 4. the godly aura seen as Super Saiyan Blue is also present.
